Started as Avadh University, the institution was renamed to its present name in 1993-94 in memory of Dr. Ram Mohan Lohia who was an idealist in the socio-economic field. The early years of the university were functioned in a rented building and the progress of the university has been steady. The milestones that mark the growth of the institution include the building constructions, gaining the status of an affiliating cum residential campus, additions of newer departments and courses and the introduction of the institute of engineering and technology.The admission process is carried out through the entrance examinations and the eligible candidates are provided admittance into the university. Dr. B.R.Ambedkar Chair in Economics is an initiative by the state government in order to promote and encourage the economic ideas of Ambedkar. The university constitutes of an administrative body that consists of different officers who head the various sections of the institute. The university has a full-fledged library that houses books and periodicals. Health Centers, Student Amenity Center and Sports Council encourage the physical well-being of the students while the social equilibrium of the society is taken care of by the NSS and the NCC. Placement Cell and Information Bureau and Employment Exchange Office actively engage in the career building of the students. The residential buildings for both men and women ensure a safe accommodation for the students. The community center is a platform for seminars and enables seating of a large number of students. It is reported that about seven lakhs students, inclusive of regular and private students are presently trained within the university. The amenities and facilities offered by the university guarantee a rich learning experience for the students and assure a career-oriented learning.
